CUTTING EDGE: Happy Birthday, Tetris

Twenty-five years ago tomorrow, Russian programmer Alexey Pajitnov unleashed the addictive puzzle game Tetris on an unsuspecting world, reports CNET News, which notes that “along with Super Mario Bros. and Pong, Tetris is one of those games that defined the video game industry during its early years.” In 1989, Nintendo sold 35 million copies of the Game Boy version of Tetris, and today, 1.5 million people a week visit The Tetris Co. Web site to play the game and download the game onto their mobile devices.

Editorial Note: The post was corrected to add the rate of visits to the Tetris Web site (1.5 million visits a week).
