ON THE CUTTING EDGE: Preserving Liberty
Wired.com describes the indignities visited upon the Declaration of Independence – “[d]uring the Revolutionary War [it[was rolled up and toted around”; “[w]ater was spilled on it while it was being copied in 1823”; and “it was subjected to a strong northern light” while hanging on a wall at the U.S. Patent Office for about 40 years. The precious document, along with the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, has since been preserved for posterity in a titanium casement filled with inert argon gas.
