NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: FL Governor Lauds Anti-Semitic Nazi Propaganda Film
A letter sent from the office of Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) that bore his automated signature thanked white supremacist John Ubele for sending a DVD of the Nazi propaganda film "Jud Suss," and promised to share it with the state’s citizens, reports The Associated Press:
"I was surprised considering the stigma that has been associated with the film," Ubele said Friday in an exchange of e-mails with The Associated Press. …
The governor's office, however, said it was an embarrassing mistake. The signature was made by a machine and Crist never saw the letter, said Sterling Ivey, the governor's press secretary.
"We are NOT [sic] sharing the DVD with the people of Florida," Ivey said. "The governor does not support this view. The letter was sent out prior to us reviewing the DVD that was sent."
When the film was shown in Marseille, France, it provoked anti-Jewish violence, and was banned in Sweden in 1941.
Most pols and activists get into trouble when they condemn a film, book or other work they have not actually seen, read or heard themselves. This may be the first instance of a public figure getting egg on his face by praising a work sight unseen.
