ON THE CUTTING EDGE: Seoul Gives Stiletto-Wearers Special Treatment

Seoul has set aside nearly 5,000 parking spaces – painted pink – to spare women wearing high heels the agony of de feet by not having to walk farther than absolutely necessary in great-looking, but painful shoes. More such parking spaces at malls and office buildings are to come, as part of the South Korean capital's Women Friendly Seoul Project, reports Time magazine. Time gripes that “the plan may end up reasserting South Korean women's secondary status more than boosting it” because “only about half of its women have full-time jobs” and “many women work infamously long hours, with employers offering few systems to help working mothers keep a manageable balance between their jobs and families.” However, the idea does have merit from a personal safety standpoint. Entrances to shopping centers and office complexes are well-lit and the closer a woman can park to them, the less likely she is to be victimized by a robber or rapist. For this reason, setting aside parking spaces for high heel wearers is an idea The Stiletto thinks we should import. Of course, such an accommodation would be unnecessary if every woman who so chose could carry a concealed firearm but in the meanwhile, this small step can help prevent violent crimes against women.
