NOT THE SHARPEST KNIVES IN THE DRAWER: Mad (Wo)Men

Tennis ace Serena Williams will be featured in a new print and online video advertising campaign with the theme "Outsmart Mother Nature" for Procter & Gamble's Tampax, reports Marketing Daily:

One print ad shows Williams slamming a tennis ball back at the brand's Mother Nature character as she tries to deliver her "monthly gift."

"Serena embodies the energy, independence and strength we celebrate in women, and this exciting partnership is a game-changing moment for the feminine care industry," said Courtney Schuster, associate brand manager for Tampax, in a statement. …

P&G officials were unavailable to comment - either via phone or e-mail - about whether Williams' behavior had any impact on their decision to run the campaign.

Williams’ belligerent, profanity-laced tirade on the court at the U.S. Open (taking issue with a foot fault call she screamed, “I swear to G-d, if I could, I would take this [expletive] ball and shove it down your [expletive] throat!,” while shoving a ball close to the line judge’s face) could make people think of PMS, undercutting the effectiveness of the ad campaign - or worse, creating a negative association with the brand.
