WHAT A HEEL: Bell Ringer Sounds False Alarm Over “Stolen” Kettle

Salvation Army bell ringer Charles Gidron, 58, told police that his kettle was stolen at gunpoint as he collected donations in Vacaville, CA. But before filing the police report, he had given the kettle and the $132 in donations it held to a relative, reports the San Francisco Chronicle:

The relative, whom police did not arrest, was unaware he was helping Gidron steal the pot, authorities said.

Gidron confessed at the scene and was arrested for embezzlement and filing a false police report, Makimoto said.

Editorial Note: Here’s an example of what the money in Gidron’s kettle - or another like it - could have been used for.
