WHAT A HEEL: Doctor Diverts Patient’s Liver Transplant: Prosecutors
Surgeon Richard Lopez, 54, who directed the liver transplant program at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy, concealing a material fact and falsification of records for allegedly transplanting a liver accepted for one patient into another who had a lower priority on a national waiting list, reports the Los Angeles Times. Based on false information allegedly provided by Lopez and other unnamed co-conspirators, the national organ transplant network took the patient who was supposed to get the liver off the transplant list, and he eventually died.
