WHAT A HEEL: Criminal Temp Takes Tax Check
GA Department of Revenue investigators accuse Lisa Michelle Darden, a temp at the state processing center for tax refunds, returns and payments, of stealing a $27,000 check made out to the agency, and learned that she been arrested more than a dozen times in the past 15 years, reports WSB-TV (Channel 2, Atlanta):
The revenue commissioner would not confirm whether the woman used a fake name when applying for the job, but [said] she was brought in by a temp agency. The revenue commissioner said the agency should have done a background check on the woman. …
Darden’s criminal history in DeKalb County dates back to 1995. She pleaded guilty to several charges of theft and forgery and was on probation when the new case took place. …
The Department of Revenue has its own full-time criminal investigators. All employees are checked for criminal history and tax problems every year, but temporary employees may not receive the same scrutiny. Both agencies the Department of Revenue uses claim to do complete criminal background checks.
Three other employees had been caught stealing in 2009.
