NOT THE SHARPEST KNIVES IN THE DRAWER: Man’s Friends Set His Fake Leg On Fire – And He Was Cool With That
A 47-year-old man who lost a drinking game suffered the consequences: his friends set him on fire, causing "significant" burns to a third of his body, reports Las Cruces (NM) Sun-News:
Emergency personnel found the man, who has a prosthetic leg, on the U.S. 70 bridge over Del Rey Boulevard … with "significant" burns to his leg, buttocks, his plastic prosthesis "and what was left of his sock," according to a police report.
It is unknown if the man's false leg was destroyed, or what injuries originally led to the loss of his leg.
As punishment for only drinking a six-pack of beer in a drinking contest, his three friends allegedly set his jeans and his prosthesis on fire and let the material - then his flesh - burn and blacken until he "could not stand the pain of wearing clothes" and stripped down to his shoes, the police report states. When he couldn't stand the flames any more, he asked for a ride from his friend's home on Butterfield Boulevard to somewhere near a medical clinic. His friends got nervous when he complained of his pains, he said, and dropped him off on the highway.
"If they had lost the bet," the man told police, "he would have done the same to them." …
It appears the man - whose name is not being made public because police consider him a victim - might have been celebrating his release that day from probation after a 2007 conviction for aggravated drunken driving, unlawful taking of a vehicle and burglary from Christmas Eve, 2006.
Authorities are investigating the incident to determine whether the victim’s friends torched him on purpose, or were too drunk to know that they would injure him if they set him on fire. The results of the inquiry will determine whether the state pursues criminal charges - aggravated battery is against the law, even if you asked for it.
