THE DAILY BLADE: AZ Becomes The Epicenter Of Civility
In the wake of the Tucson shootings (allegedly) committed by apolitical nut-job Jared Loughner (pronounced “Loser”), the University of Arizona has established the National Institute for Civil Discourse, which aims to promote compromise amongst opposing political parties and views. Former presidents Bill Clinton and President George H. W. Bush have been tapped to serve as honorary chairmen of the foundation.
Bush 41 – like his son Bush 43 – has assiduously avoided criticizing his successors, so The Stiletto has no quarrel with his assuming this role. But Clinton perfected the politics of personal destruction and prominent members of his own party took issue with the unpresidential role he took on as Hillary’s attack dog in the 2008 campaign. And more recently, he smeared talk radio and the Tea Party movement.
Former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD) and retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will be honorary co-chairmen of the institute. With four honorary chairmen you might think this thing is all chiefs and no Indians (hope that idiom is still considered fit for civil folk to use; a Google search did not suggest otherwise). But the rest of the board will include former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright (who, BTW, once used the vulgar term “cojones” in public – then again, so did Sarah Palin but nobody's asked her to join this wingding); former Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ); former adviser to President Ronald Reagan Kenneth Duberstein; director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics Trey Grayson; and FOX News anchor Greta Van Susteren.
Oh, wait … where are the Indians?
