WHAT HEELS: Only In NY
NYC is the kind of town where a promotional “Martini Week” invites aficionados to “savor $11 martinis at tons of fine locales” – which, believe it or not is what passes for a “bargain” in The Big Apple.
So it should not come as a surprise – and yet, it does – that some boîtes add a surcharge for ice. From BarBiz-e, an online trade publication for barkeeps:
A disgruntled customer that [sic] ordered a [$13] Grey Goose cocktail at The Darby in Tribeca, was charged an extra $2 for ordering it on the rocks.
"Drinks with ice get a bigger pour," said Patrick Robertson, general manager of The Darby on West 14th Street. "We charge a lot more because we use more alcohol for a drink served with ice. We're not charging for the ice." …
"Clearly, this person doesn't go out much and doesn't' know how things work," said Robertson. …
A Daily News reporter went to The Darby and ordered a Maker's Mark on the rocks, a $14 drink, but was not charged for ice. When asked why there was no additional charge for ice, the bartender stated "Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. All the other jobs I had, we charged extra for rocks because it's more liquor."
