WHAT A HEEL: ¿Yo Quiero My Baby?
Heidi Lynn Knowles, 36, was arrested for (allegedly) trying to sell her 3-day-old son for $500 to a woman in a Taco Bell, The Vancouver Columbian reports:
Deputies took written statements from the woman who called 911, from someone who had been with her, and from a Taco Bell employee - all corroborating the allegation that Knowles tried to sell the baby. …
Knowles is being held without bail under her maiden name, Gasaway, and will make a first appearance in court on Monday, a jail officer said.
Besides the potential attempted child-selling charge, she’s in custody on previously issued arrest warrants from Benton County, charging bail-jumping, possessing drug paraphernalia and theft, the officer said.
Gasaway, who is homeless, is going through a divorce and could be suffering from post-partum depression. The baby is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Edtiorial Note: In a bizarre twist, police and the media confused Heidi Lynne Mast (née Knowles) and Heidi Lynn Knowles (née Gasaway), creating a nightmare for a woman whose only brush with the law has been a couple of speeding tickets, The Vancouver Columbian reports:
"She’s 5-foot-4 and I’m 5-foot-8," said Mast. "She has brown hair and brown eyes and I have blond hair and green eyes. … I’ve never met her, but I understand we once lived less than one mile apart in Vancouver." …
“[M]y Facebook page exploded with people calling me a ‘baby-seller’ and acting very hostile," Mast said. "I got calls from Portland television stations asking for an interview. When I told them I wasn’t the ‘right’ Heidi Knowles, they told me they knew I was lying." …
"One of the biggest differences between us," said Mast, "is that I haven’t been blessed or lucky enough to have any children. Should that ever happen, I couldn’t dream of selling a child. Even for (Knowles), that was a new low."
