WHAT A HEEL: Life Imitates “Survivor”

In March William Ernst, 57, owner of the IA-based QC Mart convenience store chain, sent his employees a memo informing them of a contest in which they would submit the name of the next cashier they thought would be fired – secret shoppers were going to be dispatched to check for such infractions as talking on a cellphone and not wearing a QC Mart shirt – offering a $10 to the “winner,” USA Today reports:

[Cashier Misty Shelsky] and her store manager, along with a few other employees, quit as soon as they saw the memo and realized it wasn't a joke.

"It was very degrading," she said. "We looked at that, then looked at each other, and said, 'OK, we're done.'"

When Shelsky applied for unemployment benefits, Ernst challenged the claim, saying she had resigned voluntarily.

Calling the contest "egregious and deplorable," Administrative Law Judge Susan Ackerman awarded unemployment benefits to Shelsky.
