Terminal stupidity

NOT THE SHARPEST KNIVES IN THE DRAWER: When the new $36 million, 58K-sq-ft terminal – built with $10 million in stimulus funds, BTW – at Monroe Regional Airport opened for business, officials found out that markings on the tarmac indicating how far planes should stop from the terminal were 30 feet further back than they should have been. As a result, planes were unable to connect to the 76-foot long jet ways leading to the terminal gates, The News Star (Monroe, LA) reports:

"What happened was the individuals responsible for putting down the pavement markings used the wrong bridge. There are different sized bridges manufactured, and they did the pavement markings based on the wrong bridge," [Monroe Public Works Director Tom Janway] said.

Over the next two to three days, crews will remove the pavement stripping and replace the markings, Janway said. …

Once the pavement markings are replaced, the passenger loading bridges will be able to service Delta's and Continental's aircraft. …

"Since those bridges were approved and constructed, American Airlines changed aircraft to an older model with a different wing span. We have a gentleman coming in … to determine if American Airlines can use those bridges," Janway said.
