Jay-Z tries to capitalize off Occupy Wall Street protests
GOODY TWO SHOES: Some celebrities, like Yoko Ono, offered Occupy Wall Street protesters such intangibles as “her love” and “John’s smile” – but kept their hands in their pockets. Others, like Jay-Z, saw a chance to put his hand in the pockets of the protesters and make a buck off the protest movement.
On Firday, Jay-Z’s company, Rocawear, started selling a $22 shirt with the slogan “Occupy All Streets” that was “created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement.” When Business Insider asked whether any proceeds from sales of the shirts would be donated to any of the Occupiers, Rocawear admitted in a statement that the company “not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.” Roughly 24 hours after the rapper was called out for his duplicitousness, the shirts were yanked from the Rocawear Website.
