VT woman loots local American Legion post

WHAT A HEEL: Dawnette Greene, 37, who pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transportation of stolen money, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for embezzling $65,000 from Readsboro American Legion Post 29, the Bennington (VT) Banner reports:

Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Wapples said Greene, once released, will be on supervision for three years and has been ordered by U.S. District Judge Christina Reiss to pay $69,288 in restitution. …

According to state police in Shaftsbury, who investigated the case, Greene was the live-in caretaker for the Legion’s former financial officer, Daniel Scaia. Greene had access to his personal finances as well as the books he managed for the American Legion post. Police said that between December 2009 and mid-July 2010, Greene wrote 35 checks payable to herself or Scaia and either forged his signature or used his signature stamp when she cashed them at a Massachusetts bank the Legion keeps deposits in. …

Greene was charged late last year in Bennington Superior Court Criminal Division with financially exploiting a vulnerable adult. It was alleged Greene took $47,000 of Scaia’s savings. It is unclear whether those charges are still pending. State prosecutors indicated the state cases were on hold while the federal matters were resolved.

Greene gambled away the money she stole from the American Legion and from Scaia, who has declared bankruptcy.
