Pocket dialed 9-1-1 call leads to arrest
NOT THE SHARPEST KNIVES IN THE DRAWER: Moments after Brian A. Johnson (left) and Jason S. Hamielec lifted several DVDs and computer games from a Target in Madison, WI, police knew that they should be looking for two guys driving a blue Dodge Durango without license plates headed for a Video X-Change store, because that’s where they would get the best prices for the stolen goods. How did the cops know all this? The thieves were broadcasting their every move to a 9-1-1 dispatcher for nearly an hour after one of them accidently “pocket dialed” the emergency number, Wisconsin State Journal reports:
When then the pair pulled into a parking lot near the Video X-Change, they noticed a couple of squad cars, DeSpain said. The next thing they knew, several officers, a couple with guns drawn, were yelling, “Police! Show your hands!” …
As officers inventoried the stolen items and the men’s property, DeSpain said, one of them looked at the smoking gun – the cellphone that was still on with a 911 call taker listening in.
