“Math genius” Al Franken flunks Algebra 101
NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE DRAWER: Self-described “math genius” Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) sent out a fundraising letter on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee using “a math metaphor, urging donors to pay up to prevent Republicans from taking control of the Senate," The Washington Post reports:
The e-mail … lapses into a difficult-to-follow equation: “X = President Romney. Y = a Republican Senate. X + Y = Z. Solve for Z,” he challenged.
“Z could mean the end of Medicare as we know it,” Franken said. …
Franken then switches to the old hard sell. “But, alas, it’ll take more than elementary geometry to help the DSCC reach its $90,000 goal before Saturday night’s deadline. We need your help. By which, again, I mean your money.”
The Stiletto, who does not claim to be a math genius but simply paid attention in middle school, knows that the equation X + Y = Z is elementary algebra, and not geometry. BTW, The WaPo’s Al Kamen did not pick up on the mistake, either.
