I can see the posters now. "Pervs Against Concealed Carry". Earnest young woman, hands clasped on bosom "I'd rather die than defend myself!" The terms of the assignment were you had to make protest posters, not necessarily persuasive ones. But posting the photos was beyond the pale and I hope she gets smacked good for that one.

What about personal time? one of them asked. According to that same article, religious conservatives give more personal time (like donating blood) than liberals. And donations are considered as a percentage of income. So the widow and her mite would score highest.

One thing. Secular conservatives give the least. Religious conservatives give the most, followed by religious liberals, secular liberals and secular conservatives.

I thought the personal charity vs levied taxes was an important point.

No offense meant to Mr. Salazar, but in some cases you know very well that the man intends to rape you. I had three knife wounds in my back within five minutes: that's a pretty solid clue there. Obviously you need to be careful with guns. There are no "do-overs" with guns. You don't want to put a round in the guy running up the alley toward you because it's cold and his car is parked behind you. (I've had that happen as well.) But the solution is not to take away our guns as if we were children. And in general, people who resort to guns in self defense simply show them rather than blasting away.

One other thing. The list of self defense techniques like screaming etc. is actually not bad. There is an old book titled HOW TO SAY NO TO A RAPIST AND SURVIVE that has a bunch of these. One woman, when grabbed, screamed and dropped to the ground thrashing. Her attacker bolted. One claimed to be pregnant, kept asking the guy to not hurt her baby. He said "I can't hurt a baby" and slunk off. The list- and book- give those of us who don't carry guns other things to try besides hand to hand combat. Consider it like having an escape plan for if disaster strikes. Still- to paraphrase Al Capone- you survive better with an escape plan and a gun than with just an escape plan.

I wonder if Stallone is making the common mistake of assuming an "assault rifle" is an actual automatic fire military weapon? In actuality, these are standard one shot per trigger pull rifles (first four minutes). And, yes, people do hunt with "assault rifles".

As to video games, if they make people violent, hard core gamers would be the most violent. They are not. I am reminded of an interview with the father of Evan Ramsey who some years ago killed two people in his high school in Bethel Alaska. His dad, Don Ramsey, according to an article in the Boston Globe, talked about how Evan played a lot of Doom (first person shooter) and thought he might have been imitating the game when he killed those people. What the reporter did not know was that Don Ramsey had himself taken guns into the Anchorage Times building because he was angry at the editor. He didn't kill anyone but only because he wasn't intending to. I saw their lobby the next day and the ceiling was full of holes. So was it the video game? Really?

And only hit his target once. Well, now we know why anyone would need a high-capacity magazine. I confess the inaccuracy of police shooting compared to civilian shooting was a surprise. One other reason police are no substitute for armed citizens is obvious. They aren't there when the crime is going down. The victim is - and if that person is armed - she may not end up a victim at all.

The statistic that a gun in the home is more dangerous to family than an intruder is not that simple. They say a gun is more dangerous, defined as killing someone. Many times, simply saying you have a gun or showing a gun chases off the intruder. Not all self-defense involves killing.

Second, certain classes of people should not have guns around. If anyone in the household might be suicidal, don't have a gun. Likewise, if you are willing to tolerate in your home someone who is violent, don't have a gun - at least where they can get at it. (Adam Lanza's mother comes to mind.) And obviously, if you have children, teach them the Eddie Eagle rule. "If you see a gun, don't touch it. Leave the area. Tell a grown-up." And if you have a gun in your house because you are a gangbanger, get out of that life. When A Crip shoots a Blood, the gun is not the problem. The number of accidental deaths from guns is very low. The number of lives saved by guns easily surpasses it.

Ditto and for the same reason. The military is no place for PC. One semantic quibble: women should be able to perform, not perform as a man. My father in law weighed 120 pounds in the Army (WWII) and could barely carry his assigned gear. At least one woman took and passed the Green Beret course. The military has downgraded standards for women which bothers me and that should NOT BE. Particularly, as you say, in combat.

There is a type of oral contraceptive that supresses periods and I imagine it would be standard issue.

I have no problem with women *trying* to get into the infantry, but it is dangerous enough that she has to be able to perform physically, psychologicaly and cognitively *exactly* as a man would otherwise she endangers herself and everyone else. Women who are mothers with sons in the war would prefer to get those sons back hale and hearty, and won't be comforted knowing that their son died to serve the cause of political correctness.
